We started because we were tired of seeing people quit

Every January, gyms fill up with motivated people who fade away by March. Not because they lack willpower, but because they were never given proper guidance.

How glow-fern came to be

In 2014, our founder Emma Richardson was working as a strength coach for elite athletes whilst also running evening classes at a commercial gym. She noticed a pattern: the amateur clients who paid for group sessions often made faster progress than the professionals with unlimited resources.

The difference wasn't talent or time. It was consistency and the quality of coaching attention they received. The group clients showed up reliably, asked questions, and learned to move properly because someone was watching and correcting them every session.

That observation became the foundation for glow-fern. We created a training environment where everyday people get the same level of technical coaching that used to be reserved for professional athletes, delivered in a format that fits normal schedules and budgets.

Twelve years later, we're still refining that model. No frills, no fads, just effective programming and proper coaching that helps people build strength and capability that lasts.

What guides our work

Honesty icon

Honest communication

We tell you what will work, not what you want to hear. If your goals aren't realistic, we'll explain why and suggest alternatives that are.

Craftsmanship icon

Technical excellence

Coaching is a skill that improves with practice and study. Our team invests hundreds of hours annually in continued education and peer review.

Respect icon

Mutual respect

You're paying for expertise, not judgement. We work with people where they are, whether that's recovering from injury or training for competition.

Progress icon

Measured progress

We track what matters: can you move better, lift more, or do things you couldn't do before? Those metrics don't lie.

Community icon

Supportive culture

We've built a space where people encourage each other without the competitiveness or intimidation you find in many gyms.

Long-term icon

Long-term thinking

We optimise for what keeps you training in ten years, not what gets you sore tomorrow. Sustainability beats intensity every time.

The coaching team

Every coach holds recognised qualifications and maintains active professional development. More importantly, they've all worked with hundreds of clients and know how to adapt methods to real people.

Our training philosophy in detail

We believe in progressive overload

Your body adapts to stress by getting stronger. We systematically increase training demands over time, whether that's adding weight, reps, or complexity. But progression must be gradual and appropriate to your recovery capacity.

Movement quality comes before load

Lifting heavy weight with poor technique builds poor movement patterns and eventually leads to injury. We teach proper mechanics first, then progressively challenge those patterns under increasing load.

Consistency beats perfection

Three moderate training sessions per week, maintained for months, will deliver better results than an aggressive programme you can only sustain for a few weeks. We design training you can actually stick to.

Recovery is part of training

You don't get stronger during workouts, you get stronger during recovery. We programme rest days, deload weeks, and recovery protocols as deliberately as we programme training sessions.

Context matters

The same exercise can be appropriate or inappropriate depending on your anatomy, training history, and current goals. We individualise recommendations rather than following one-size-fits-all templates.

Questions about our approach

All coaches hold minimum Level 3 Personal Training qualifications or equivalent. Several hold degree-level qualifications in sports science or related fields. Our lead coaches hold advanced certifications such as UKSCA accreditation or CSCS certification. We maintain professional indemnity insurance and first aid certifications.

Our coaches attend conferences, complete online courses, and participate in peer review sessions. We subscribe to research journals and regularly discuss new findings as a team. When credible evidence suggests we should change our approach, we do.

We regularly work with older adults, people managing chronic conditions, and those recovering from injury. We coordinate with medical professionals when appropriate and stay within our scope of practice. If someone needs medical clearance before training, we'll request it.

Monthly memberships can be cancelled with one month's notice. Personal training packages are non-refundable but sessions never expire, so you can use them whenever suits you. If you're unsure about committing, start with a single session or one month to see if we're a good fit.

The best way to understand our approach is to experience it. Come in for an initial consultation and we'll talk through your goals.
